Job Description

Vacancy: Director, Global Application Engineering and Testing, Battery Materials

Our client are currently recruiting for a key leadership position in the high visibility growth business of Battery Materials (BM), which is committed to investing in and rapidly bringing new technologies to market and winning automotive platforms. Key to this aspiration is the ability to correlate at a competitive pace the internally measured performance of material developments to the targets of commercial battery cell programmes, targeted for a specific electrified powertrain.
The successful candidate will lead our expanding global Application Centre network which will: drive excellence in internal quality control testing (analytical and electrochemical) to support product development, process scale-up and operational automotive quality requirements; seek to expand a library of customised tests as a function of target Application to achieve performance parity with the testing centres of our customers; be the key technical customer interface for understanding in-operando performance requirements and stewarding the Application testing aspects of programme shoot-outs; drive innovation programmes that seek to challenge the status quo and drive competitive advantage from a timeline and insight perspective; develop best-in-class tools (multi-scale cell formats and physics-based models) to bridge the gap between measured material properties and target on-board battery performance; provide up-to-date view on product bench-marking data and value-add technology steps beyond a standalone material offering as input into technology road-mapping.
Key responsibilities
• Build-out and lead existing multi-site Application Testing team; accountable for the User Requirement Specifications for the Application Centre Capital expansion plan (incl. multi-scale electrode formation, battery assembly and testing)
• Evolve internal analytical and electrochemical Quality Control procedures to achieve best-in-class; champion importance to product commercialisation with a rigorous, traceable and timeline-conscious mindset
• Collaborate closely with the Commercial and Product development teams to determine customer requirements and coordinate Application testing-associated activities. Responsible for ensuring that testing methodologies minimise programme shoot-out iterations by seeking parity with customer testing standards
• Support the Commercial team as a technical expert and coordinate the Application teams•support of customers to steward successful handling of BM products
• Interact closely with the Technology Leadership team to facilitate commercialisation of new products and processes
• Lead ideation sessions, define innovation programmes and drive successful execution to build competitive advantage in Application Testing in line with business Playbook and NPI requirements
• Lead the development of best-in-class tools to bridge the gap between measured material properties and target on-board battery performance; leverage as a customer-facing tool
• Support the Technology and Business Development Director to evolve the Technology Roadmap; emphasis on performance bench-marking and view on value-add technology steps in the battery materials value chain

  Job Requirements

Are you the ideal candidate?
• Advanced technical degree required, preferably a Ph.D. in a related field
• Demonstrable experience in a business environment proving out the multi-scale performance attributes of battery materials, preferably lithium-ion, for real-world Applications (automotive will be viewed as advantageous); must act as an expert for the business and be recognised in the field
• Understanding of the scope of a staged roadmap for building tools (experimental and modelling) to bridge the gap between measured material properties and target on-board battery performance
• Experience building competencies and managing high-performing technical teams; preferably multi-site and global
• Experience interacting with external customers; track record of achieving best-in-class results in customer testing will be viewed as advantageous
• Ability to travel both domestically and internationally to support multi-site operations and customers
