Job Description

The Automation Technician repairs and maintains the computer-controlled systems and automated devices used within plant facility to reduce human intervention and maximize efficiency. The incumbent will perform routine diagnostic checks on automated systems, monitor automated systems, isolate problems and perform repairs. The technician needs to troubleshoot the issue and determine if the problem is mechanical, electrical or from the computer systems controlling the process. The incumbent is required to have a solid knowledge of electronics, mechanics and computer systems. This position will report directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.


Provide technical support and ability to troubleshoot all plant PLC’s systems.
 Install & set-up of VFD’s.
 Proficient in testing electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
 Assemble, install, test and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus and fixtures.
 Maintain electrical equipment to meet regulatory codes at the country, state and federal levels.
 Perform rigging activities, safety-related functions and other miscellaneous electrical functions.
 Demonstrated safe and proficient use of shop tools (both hand and power).
 Must possess demonstrated ability to safely operate mobile equipment such as forklifts and high lift.
 Ability to performing work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
 Perform installation and maintenance work as part of a team of skilled trade workers.
 Ensures compliance with all safety procedures, establishes, and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free and healthy work environment.
 Eliminate or control hazardous conditions resulting from human error, equipment and machine operations, which may lead to human injury and or property damage.
 Report all EH&S incidents – Injuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage.
 Ensure adherence to Waste Management and Recycling responsibilities.
 Participate in Incident & Near Miss Investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions.
 Participate in the development, understanding and review of all position JSA and SOP’s
 Conduct weekly SMAT’s or other audit requirements as requested by Manager.
 Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

Job Requirements

AAS degree or certifications in the areas of automation programs, integrated computer programing and process controls and/or 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible journey level electrical experience in a manufacturing environment. Additional training in hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers, and electrical circuits is a plus. Excellent problem solving capabilities and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks. Flexible and open-minded with excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels in the organization. Understanding of computerize maintenance management systems is expected. Knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001, is a plus, including continual improvement tools such as Lean Manufacturing, TPM, and Six Sigma.
